"I am honoured to have been recognized by Dr. Kirsty Duncan for my contributions to Canada during my service in the Canadian Forces and for the charitable work that I do in the Toronto community. Being awarded a King Charles III Coronation Medal was a deeply humbling and moving experience, and a moment of immense pride and gratitude." – Michael Gomes, Area Manager at Amazon’s YYV7 fulfilment centre

A Legacy of Service

Michael’s service journey began in the Canadian Forces, where he rose through the ranks from a gunner to an artillery officer, eventually commanding his regiment. As a Manager at Amazon YYZ7, Michael applies this teamwork, leadership, and service-driven mindset to support employees and drive operational excellence. His recognition included his commitment to giving back in a variety of areas:

  • Supporting military veterans: Organizing visits to Second World War and Korean War veterans at Toronto’s Sunnybrook Hospital on Easter, Thanksgiving, Remembrance Day, and Christmas.
  • Community giving: Leading annual food drives and holiday basket programs, securing tens of thousands of pounds of food for families in need.
  • Fundraising for charities: Organizing charity golf tournaments to raise funds for the Toronto Artillery Foundation and organizations like Brands for Canada, which provides clothing and essential goods to families.
  • Mentorship and leadership: Coaching and training future leaders through volunteer initiatives and professional development programs. Michael’s commitment to service and leadership remains strong at Amazon, where he is one of two Managers at his site actively involved in Warriors at Amazon, one of Amazon’s 13 employee-led groups. Founded in Canada in 2018, Warriors at Amazon supports veterans, military spouses, and military-connected communities. It serves as both a support system and an advocacy network, fostering a space where veterans feel valued, included, and empowered in their civilian careers.

Groups like Warriors at Amazon play an invaluable role in helping veterans navigate the transition to a civilian workplace, offering networking opportunities, professional development, and a strong sense of camaraderie.
